The Asian Cup, Asia's premier international football competition, has been postponed and will now be held in Saudi Arabia from 23 December 2027 to 21 January 2028. The tournament was originally scheduled for early 2027, but the Asian Football Confederation announced the delay, saying it is in the interest of all participating teams.

According to Index.hr, the postponement comes as a result of ongoing conflicts and tensions across the continent. The confederation stated that a world-class tournament cannot be properly organised while wars continue in the region. The Asian Cup serves as the continental equivalent of the European Championship and Copa America.

Croatian football fans will have a particular interest in the rescheduled event: former national team coach Zlatko Dalić will lead the United Arab Emirates. Dalić, who guided Croatia to the 2018 World Cup final, has been in charge of the UAE side and recently took them to the final of the Gulf Cup, where they lost to Saudi Arabia. At the Asian Cup, the UAE have been drawn in a group alongside South Korea, Vietnam, and Yemen.

The new dates mean Dalić's team will have to wait a little longer before their Asian Cup campaign begins, but the extra time could allow for further preparation and hopefully more stable conditions in the region.
