A forest fire that broke out near Dubrovnik on Wednesday evening was brought under control by around 10pm, the Dubrovnik-Neretva fire commander has confirmed. The blaze consumed nine hectares of forest and tall maquis in the Osojnik area, not far from the city.
The fire was reported at approximately 8pm on Wednesday, and crews from the Dubrovnik Fire Brigade (JVP Dubrovački vatrogasci) were quickly dispatched. Strong bura winds made initial efforts difficult, causing the flames to spread rapidly across the dry terrain. Despite the challenging conditions, firefighters managed to contain the fire within about two hours.
Earlier in the evening, Commander Simović had told N1 that the situation did not look good, with a large number of firefighters on the ground and the possibility of calling in additional forces. However, crews were able to bring the fire under control by around 10pm.
Commander Stjepan Simović told N1 that the fire was brought under control at approximately 10pm. "Nine hectares of forest and tall maquis burned. We are still guarding the fire site and will continue damping down the area, but I believe everything will be fine," he said.
No injuries or damage to buildings have been reported. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Firefighters are expected to remain on scene throughout Thursday to monitor hotspots and prevent any flare-ups as the strong winds continue in the region.
