Espanyol have sacked head coach Manolo González after the Barcelona-based club crashed out of the Copa del Rey first round with a 4-3 extra-time defeat at fourth-tier Sestao River on Tuesday. The 47-year-old had already been under pressure after Espanyol collected six defeats in their opening ten La Liga matches, leaving them 18th in the table.

In a statement released on Tuesday night, the club said that it had decided to end González's mandate after more than three seasons and 107 official matches, during which he left a personal and professional mark both on the pitch and in the daily functioning of the team.

González took charge in March 2024 and immediately guided Espanyol back to the Spanish top flight. No successor has been named, with the club's next match a trip to Villarreal on Friday. Espanyol, who returned to La Liga in 2024, will hope a new coach can lift them away from the relegation zone.
