US President Donald Trump announced this week that his administration is rolling back methane emission regulations for oil and gas producers introduced under the Biden administration. Speaking at a rally in Lubbock, Texas, Trump said the move would save consumers and energy producers $45 billion (about €39 billion). The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had earlier estimated similar savings but has not released detailed calculations.
Methane is the main component of natural gas and the second-largest contributor to global warming after carbon dioxide. It is responsible for roughly a third of the rise in global temperatures since pre-industrial times, though it stays in the atmosphere for only 7 to 12 years, far shorter than CO₂. According to the International Energy Agency, the United States is the world's largest source of methane emissions from oil and gas production, followed by Russia.
In sports, former Hajduk Split coach Gennaro Gattuso is enjoying a strong resurgence in Italy. His Lazio side beat Sassuolo 6:2 on Tuesday to move top of Serie A, and they remain unbeaten in the league. After a difficult spell at Hajduk and a failed attempt to qualify Italy for the World Cup, Gattuso has transformed Lazio into an aggressive, direct team. The left side of Nuno Tavares and Mattia Zaccagni has been particularly effective, with Tavares attacking the flank while Zaccagni drifts inside. Gattuso himself has acknowledged that he now focuses on a few clear demands rather than trying to change everything about his players' behaviour.
Lazio's success marks a sharp contrast with Gattuso's time in Croatia, where his Hajduk side often struggled to control matches despite finishing third in the league. Now, with a more balanced approach, he has Lazio competing at the top of Serie A.
