US President Donald Trump said he could become “Mr. Veto” if Democrats win control of Congress in tomorrow’s midterm elections, according to a podcast interview with the New York Post. Trump suggested he would block legislation from a Democratic-controlled Congress, leading to a standoff that would eventually force negotiations.

“I guess I’ll become Mr. Veto,” Trump said, as reported by Index.hr. “They’ll send us bills and I’ll veto. After a month or two, where everything is blocked by veto, they’ll realise it’s just a waste of time and they’ll come and make a deal.”

The comments are a rare acknowledgment from Trump that his Republican Party could lose its majority. The president has campaigned heavily in traditionally Republican states where the party faces tough races due to voter concerns about the cost of living and the war in Iran.

Most polls show Democrats are well positioned to win the three seats needed to take control of the House of Representatives. Democrats are also increasingly optimistic about flipping the Senate, where seven races are considered toss-ups. Republican strategists say their internal data shows a much tighter contest, with many key races still open.

Trump also reiterated his claim that the US has “the best economy in history” and said polls do not reflect actual Republican support. In the same interview, he said he would “love to run again” for president, but noted the 22nd Amendment bars anyone from being elected more than twice.
