Marko Livaja's future at Hajduk Split is increasingly uncertain, and the club captain could leave as early as the January transfer window. The 33-year-old striker, who returned to Hajduk in February 2021, has been a talismanic figure, scoring 107 goals in 221 appearances and helping the club win two Croatian Cups. However, his role has diminished since the arrival of coach Gonzalo Garcia in the summer of 2025.
According to reports from Bosnia and Herzegovina media, Hajduk are not prepared to offer Livaja a contract extension on his current terms. His deal runs until the summer of 2027, and he reportedly earns around 1.2 million euros per year. To avoid losing him on a free transfer in 2027, the club may choose to sell him in January.
Livaja's relationship with Garcia has been tense. During pre-season preparations in Slovenia, he was sent home after a conflict with the coaching staff. Although the situation was later resolved, Livaja has spent most of the season on the bench. He did play the full 90 minutes against Gorica on Saturday, but his long-term position remains unclear.
The irony is not lost on fans: Livaja joined Hajduk with the ambition of winning the league title, something the club has not achieved since 2005. Now, with Hajduk considered one of the favourites for this season's title, he might depart in the middle of the campaign.
