The Premužić Trail (Premužićeva staza) is one of Croatia's finest hiking achievements. Built in the 1930s, this 57-kilometre path follows the high ridges of the Velebit mountain range, offering walkers an extraordinary journey through karst landscapes, pine forests and flower-filled meadows, all with the Adriatic Sea shimmering in the distance.

A Masterpiece of Mountain Engineering

The trail was designed by Ante Premužić, a forestry engineer who spent years plotting a route that would be both scenic and accessible. Unlike typical mountain paths that climb steeply up and down, the Premužić Trail maintains a remarkably gentle gradient, rarely exceeding a 10% slope. Its surface is lined with carefully laid dry-stone walls, and in places it was carved directly into the rock face. This thoughtful construction makes the trail suitable for walkers of moderate fitness, though its length and exposure demand respect.

Where the Trail Runs

The Premužić Trail stretches from the Zavižan mountain hut in the north to the village of Baške Oštarije in the south. Most of the route lies within Northern Velebit National Park, with a southern section passing through the Velebit Nature Park. The Velebit range is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognised for its exceptional biodiversity. Along the way, hikers may spot chamois, golden eagles and rare plant species such as the Velebit degenia, which grows only here.

What to Expect on the Walk

The trail is typically tackled in sections or as a three- to four-day through-hike. It crosses several peaks over 1,600 metres, including Veliki Zavižan and Štirovača, but the gentle design means there are no technical sections. The path is well marked with red and white blazes and signposts. Highlights include panoramic viewpoints over the Kvarner islands of Krk, Rab and Pag, as well as the dramatic cliffs of the Rožanski kukovi and Hajdučki kukovi reserves. Because the trail stays high on the ridge, it is exposed to sun and wind; water sources are scarce, so hikers must carry sufficient supplies.

Planning Your Hike

The best seasons for walking the Premužić Trail are late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October), when temperatures are mild and the meadows are in bloom or golden. Summer can be very hot, and winter brings snow and cold winds. The trail can be walked in either direction, but starting from Zavižan is popular because it is reachable by road from the coast. Public transport to the trailheads is limited, so most walkers arrive by car. A park entry ticket is required for the national park section. Accommodation along the route consists of mountain huts and simple shelters; booking ahead in high season is advisable. Camping is only permitted in designated areas.

Practical Tips

  • Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are recommended, as the rocky surface can be uneven.
  • Water: Carry at least two litres per person per day; there are few reliable springs.
  • Navigation: The trail is well marked, but a GPS or map is useful, especially in fog.
  • Pack light: You will carry everything with you, so keep your load manageable.
  • Weather: Check forecasts before setting out; the mountain weather can change rapidly.

Whether you walk a short section or the entire route, the Premužić Trail offers a unique perspective on Croatia's wild mountain heart. It is a journey through a landscape shaped by wind, stone and sea, and a tribute to one man's vision of making the high peaks accessible to all.
