China's ambassador to Croatia, Qi Qianjin, is leaving Zagreb at the end of October after a five-year mandate marked by stronger political and economic links between the two countries. In a farewell interview with the Croatian weekly Obzor, he highlighted key achievements and areas for future growth.
The Pelješac bridge, built by a Chinese company, was singled out as a symbol of the partnership. The ambassador argued that despite such landmark projects, the full economic potential of the relationship has not yet been realised. He pointed to opportunities for Croatian products on the Chinese market, noting that Croatia could benefit from increased exports.
Chinese investment in Croatian infrastructure and energy was another focus. The ambassador noted growing interest from Chinese companies in sectors such as transport and renewable energy, while also drawing attention to the rising presence of Chinese car brands on Croatian roads.
On trade relations with the European Union, Qi acknowledged that any further escalation of the ongoing trade dispute could have knock-on effects for Croatia, but stressed the importance of dialogue and mutual benefit. He also touched on global issues, including the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East, and technological competition, particularly in artificial intelligence, calling for cooperation rather than confrontation.
As he departs, Qi expressed confidence that the foundations laid over the past five years will continue to support closer ties between China and Croatia, with a focus on practical projects and people-to-people exchanges.
